Abdur Rahman Chughtai (1897-1975)

Abdur Rahman Chughtai (1897-1975) was born in Lahore, Pakistan and is perhaps the most well-known and respected Pakistani Modern artist. Trained in the early 20th century at the distinguished Mayo School of Art (today National College of Art) under the guidance of modern painter S. N. Gupta, he became a distinguished portraitist of famous personalities of Islam and Hindi history. His depictions of the Hindu pantheon also exhibit his deep bond to religious traditions and national identity. His works in watercolor and printmaking reflect a great clarity and metaphoric depth of subject illustrated through a stunning purity of line. The pastoral mood of these works are clearly inspired by the art of Gauguin which underline the meaning of the artist as an important exponent of India’s Modern art age. His style is also greatly indebted to the Rajput and Islamic miniature paintings of India, which he collected and admired. Furthermore, it paid tribute to the Modernist School of Bengal which was likewise highly influential to his work particularly in his early period. His works are collected by main museums, among others the British Museum and National Art Gallery, Islamabad.
