I Dewa Nyoman Leper (1917-1984), 'Scene from Ramayana', Ca. 1936-1938. Numbered 99 and inscribed 'Dewa Njoman Leper of Oeboed' on the verso lower left, numbered 'U-1014' twice on the verso, lower right, and stamped with purple H&M (Haks & Maris) stamp and numbered '372' on the verso, upper right. Indian ink and grey wash on paper, 50.5 x 37 cm. Provenance: 1) collection Gregory Bateson & Margaret Mead (no. U-1014), who acquired the drawing directly from Leper, late 1930s; 2) collection Leo Haks & Guus Maris (no. 372); approx. 1970s; 3) private collection Leo Haks; 4) Borobudur Singapore sale Pre-war Balinese modernist paintings: the collection of Leo Haks, including works collected by Gregory Bateson & Margaret Mead and Theo Meier, October 22, 2011, lot 71.
