Bronze, 76mm, 4.7mm thick. By Thomas Webb for Daniel Eccleston. Musante GW-88, Baker 85. Obv High-relief bust r. in ornate armored cuirass, legend INSCRIBED TO HIS MEMORY BY D. ECCLESTON, LANCASTER. Rev Three concentric lines of praise around center with standing Indian, THE LAND WAS OURS. Eccleston (1745-1821) was a noted English eccentric, trader, merchant and sometime Quaker who adored Washington but was also a strong advocate of aboriginal rights. David T. Alexander showed in 1990 that this Indian was lifted from Lewis Pingo’s 1775 By Deeds of Peace Medal (Betts 531). Sharp and largely lustrous.
