Silver, 38.4mm. By John Tanner. Betts 169. Obv Pallas with emblems of war and arts, GEORGE REIGNING. Rev CAROLINE PROTECTING, Queen in ancient garb waters young palmettos. 19th century catalogers labored to connect this medal with the Carolinas. In fact, London goldsmith Henry Jernegan had made and was saddled with a massive, quarter-ton silver vase or cistern, which the Queen allowed him to dispose of by a lottery using these medals as tickets. Light handling, old scratch.
