Description
Antique Dhal war shield - a type of round handheld shield, originating in Northern India. Similar types later spread to Persia (called a Sipar). Thick, hand forged steel. Damascened/Nielo technique finish with traditional ornamentation. Convex (curved). Four bosses, covering the ring bolts, which would be attached to hide leather straps. Patterned border ornamentation. Mughal (Moghul) Empire, northern Indian subcontinent, 18th/19th century. Reference: many similar Dhal shields are displayed at prominent museums and collections around the world (The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Royal Collection in the UK, Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and etc.).
