Description
The title of this circa 1900 etching is SHORE TO SHORE. At first, it appears to be a simple view of a family crossing the water in a skiff, but when one reads the poem beneath, the symbolism of the composition becomes clear. It is a metaphor for the journey of life! Here is the poem: In CHILDHOOD'S hour, with careless joy, Upon the stream we glide: With YOUTH's bright hopes we gaily speed To reach the other side. MANHOOD looks forth with careful glance TIME steadily plies the oar, While OLD AGE calmly waits to hear The keel upon the shore. The print is matted in acid-free materials and installed in a black wooden frame with Dutch ripple detailing on the inner and outer edges. The print is in good condition. The frame has some scuffs but has been touched-up and looks acceptable. Frame size is 21"x25"
