Description
This is a framed rare Grand Tour Intaglio from the early 1800's. It is a large piece (about the size of an American Silver Dollar) featuring the deep reverse impression of a coin or medallion with the likeness of King Henry the First on it. It is mounted and framed under museum glass in a new custom-made frame. The outer matting is covered with burgundy velvet. The frame moulding is gold-metal leafed with antiqued detailing. The frame size is 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" Interested in a grouping of similarly framed pieces? Other Grand Tour Intaglios and Moulds from the set are listed in my shop. "Grand Tour" intaglios were usually made of plaster, and were souvenirs of that European tour. Grand Tour Intaglios - (with a raised surface) and Moulds/Impressions (with a concave, reverse image) were popular in the late 1700's and early 1800's as an inexpensive way to display a reproduction of European classical sculptures and ancient coins. Most are wrapped in paper on the edges because they were often displayed and collected in book form. While most plaster intaglios are white or buff, some were made of resin or wax of varying colors, and some were painted to make them look like wax seals or old metal.
