This energetically painted view of sailboats is signed J.A. Stone and dates from the mid 1900's. It has heavily textured oil paint on an artist-stretched canvas, and is in its original wide wooden frame. I have not found any information on the artist, but the scene and style of painting fits with the Cape Ann school of painting (Gloucester/Rockport, Massachusetts) and the painting was found in a Massachusetts estate. The view is crisp, the boats are well-defined. The painting has even, stable craquelure, befitting its age. The craquelure is most evident in the sky. Both the painting and the frame show signs of age, but with a new frame, the painting would seem like a prized possession. The canvas size is 20"x16"/ Frame size is 26"x22"
