BRONZE BUST OF KARL FRIEDRICH, GRAND DUKE OF BADEN
Karl Frederick, 1st Grand Duke of Baden (1728 – 1811) Margrave, elector and later the first Grand Duke of Baden from 1738 until his death. He was an enlightened despot, supporting schools, universities, jurisprudence, civil service, economy, culture, and urban development. He outlawed torture in 1767, and serfdom in 1783. Period cast bronze bust, 7 1/2" tall in a classical Roman style, the artist and date: "Joseph Kayser 1818" (Swiss, 1763-died after 1820) marked on verso. Some casting flaws to toga below neckline, estimated accordingly.
