GERMAN PRESENTATION HAND-PAINTED SCROLL GIVEN TO ALEXANDER VON LIEZEN-MAYER
Renaissance style scroll made of silver-plated brass with richly etched arabesques and portrait medallions, the neatly cut and tooled leather case bearing the inscription "Alexander Liezenmayer - Munich AD 1880". The side ends are crowned with two large rock crystals. The parchment scroll can be rolled out and is decorated with an allegory of Liezenmayer's farewell: the heraldic animal of Stuttgart, a red horse, with a palette showing the monogram "AL" leaping away from the "Münchner Kindl" (a symbolic figure representing the town) and toward a Württemberg cherub, on the right corner the monogram "RS". Beneath the calligraphed dedication and 277 signatures. Among the donors are Dr. v. Erhardt (first mayor), v. Piloty, Riefstahl, von Kotzebue, Louis Braun, Otto von Faber du Faur, Benczur, Lindenschmit, Wagner, Hoff, Diez, Defregger, Stieler, Grützner, Mali, Zügel, Seitz, v. Heckel, Schraudolph, Zumbusch, Bodenmüller, Voltz, Neureuther, the family Oldenbourg, Miller, Spitzweg, Hanfstaengl, Trübner and many more. Seal missing. Length 58 cm. Alexander von Liezenmayer first studied in Vienna and from 1852 onward in Munich at the Art Academy under v. Piloty. His nomination as director of the Stuttgart Art Academy in 1880 was followed only three years later by his return to Munich as professor for historical painting. In 1893 he became professor for religious painting at the Munich Art Academy. Unique document, impressive not only because of its outstanding meaning for the Munich art scene but also for its remarkable craftsmanship.
