WILLIAM THOMPSON
(1736 - 1781) Irish-born Continental Army brigadier general from Pennsylvania. After Thompson's company of Pennsylvania sharpshooters of the 1st Pennsylvania drove back a British landing party on November 9, 1775, he was promoted brigadier general. Thompson was captured during an attack at Trois-Rivières and was finally exchanged four years later for Baron Riedesel. PAYING A JEWISH PATRIOT FOR HIS SERVICES Rare A.L.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Philadelphia, Feb. 1, 1774 to JACOB MORGAN, future colonel of the Philadelphia militia and superintendent of commissioners purchasing provisions. Thompson orders that prominent immigrant merchant and Jewish patriot MICHAEL GRATZ be paid ten pounds for surveying two thousand acres of land on "the waters of Saltlick Creek". Toned at folds, mounted, else very good.
