Description
NATHANIEL WOODHULL
(1722 - 1776) New York militia general who served with distinction in the French and Indian War at Crown Point and Ticonderoga. Led the militia in the Battle of Long Island where he was captured and later died of his wounds inflicted during his capture. A.D.S. in the text, 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], March 17, 1774, in full: "I do promise to pay or cause to be paid unto Nathaniel Woodhull or his order for value received the just and full sum of seventy five pounds current money of the province of New York to be paid at or before the first day of October next ensuing and if not paid then with lawfull intrust till paid as witness my hand this 17th day of March 1774 "[all sic]. This promissory note is entirely in Woodhull's hand, and appears to have been executed by him on the behalf of the holder, whose illegible name appears on the verso. Slight splitting at original folds, some foxing, else very good. Also present is a color lithograph, 9" x 13", executed by A. Brown of New York for Henry McClosky's "Manual for 1866", depicting the house at New Utrecht on Long Island in which Woodhull died. Folds, else very good.
