Description
Major Curtis C. Gardiner and Family: CDV Photo Album and Two Cased Images. The photo album includes a standing pose of Captain C. C. Gardiner, CDVs of his family and other officers, such as: (1) George Armstrong Custer; (2) General Phillip Sheridan; and (3) a standing portrait of Boston Corbett. All are in excellent condition with only some staining on the Custer image. The two cased images are photos of unidentified children, we assume are Gardiner's family members.
At the start of the war Gardiner recruited a company of volunteers from Angelica of which he was commissioned a Captain. the company then reported to the Elmira Military Depot and were designated Company "I" of the 27th Regiment N.Y. Volunteers. By September 1861 Captain Gardiner was promoted to major of the same regiment. Major Gardiner was injured by a shell at the Battle of Gaines' Mill but remained with the army until their retreat to Harrison's Landing.
