Description
A Carved and Painted Wood, Leather, Grass, and Cowrie Shell Melanesian Male Mai Mask, IATMUL, Middle Sepik River, Papua, New Guinea
42-1/4 inches high x 12-1/2 inches wide (107.3 x 31.8 cm)
Mai masks appear at male initiation ceremonies. They represent the four original ancestors, two male and two female, and dance in pairs. Masks are attached to bark and fiber superstructures worn over the dancer's upper body. Male masks, such as the present example, are elongated, while female masks are shorter and rounder.
Condition
Losses to leather and shell ornamentation, minor chip to underside of bird's beak, some leather pieces may be reglued and exhibit cracking, with wear commensurate with age and use
