Description
DESCRIPTION: A large archive relating to the Reverends Edward Winter and Henry Winter Syle. Includes multiple newspaper clipping scrapbooks belonging to Henry, handwritten diaries/notebooks, Shanghai missionary related documents and pamphlets, other religious related documents, expenditure books and a large amount of personal correspondence both to and from Edward Syle as well as Henry Syle and his wife Margaret, and much more. The majority dated from the 1850's to 1890's. Includes three letters to Henry Syle dated 1872 and 1873 from friends in Shanghai congratulating him on his marriage to Margaret. There is also a packet of receipts from the Pennsylvania Diocese Commission on the Deaf Mute Missionary dated 1880 to 1884 and a handwritten notebook of the Ward List on Deaf Mutes in Philadelphia and Vicinity.The Reverend Edward Winter Syle was a British-born graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary and went to Shanghai as a missionary in 1845 with Bishop Boone. He remained there until 1853 for health reasons and worked for several years on a survey of destitute Chinese in New York City. His son Henry William Syle was born in Shanghai on November 9, 1846. He moved to the US at the age of four and became deaf at the age of six after an attack of scarlet fever. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1869 and a Master of Arts degree in 1872 from Yale and was the first deaf man to receive a degree from a hearing college. He married Margaret Flannery, who was also deaf, in 1872. He was ordained a deacon in 1876 and ordained to priesthood in 1884, becoming the first deaf priest in the United States. He was active not only in the church but also the deaf community for the remainder of his life. He died in 1890. MEASUREMENTS: Various.
