Item Details
Description
engraving on chine-collé, 1853, signed "W. O. Geller" in pencil lower right, copyright by William Jay, Charles Hardenberg, and William H. Emerson, Philadelphia.

This is one of only two known rare artist's proofs of this popular engraving. Distinguishing characteristics of the proof include Geller's pencil signature, use of chine-collé, and the lack of title lower margin. This lively scene illustrates Benjamin Franklin visiting the Court of France. Here, they celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Alliance, where France promised potential future backing to America during the war against Britain.

One of the two artist's proofs was sold at Christie's, New York, Printed & Manuscript Americana Sale, May 19, 2011, Lot 183.
