Kunz Meyer-Waldeck (1859-1953)

The painter started studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1879; his teachers were Alexander Strähuber and Johann Leonhard Raabe. Until 1887, Meyer-Waldeck was master-pupil in the studio of the historical painter Wilhelm von Lindenschmidt the Younger, whom he helped designing the wall paintings in the town hall of Kaufbeuren form 1882-84. From 1885-86 Meyer-Waldeck traveled through Italy, from 1888 onwards he lived as freelance artist in Munich. From this moment on he provided book illustrations for the publishing house G.A. Liebeskind in Leipzig and also created numerous still lives, landscapes, portraits and paintings with biblical, mythological and fairy-tale subjects in watercolor and oil. In the 1890s he spent a long time with his brother in Portugal, where he collected a large number of motifs and designs for his popular genre pictures. Later, he made numerous murals. From 1908-10, Meyer-Waldeck was director of the newly founded art school of the Texas Art League in Dallas and was appointed royal professor after his return to Germany. He was also awarded the Order of St. Michael. During his life, Meyer-Waldeck participated in numerous exhibitions, including the World Exhibitions in Amsterdam and St. Louis. His works can be seen for example at the Lenbachhaus in Munich, at the German National Museum in Nuremberg, at the Ogden Museum in New Orleans and at Stattlichen Museen zu Berlin. (nlu)
