Description
[Britain] MARSTON-MOOR: SIVE DE OBSIDIONE PRAELIO que EBORACENSI CARMEN; Cum Quibusdam Miscellaneis. Opera Stuioque Pagani Piscatoris Flucudratis. Lon: Thomas Newcomb, 1650. Divisional title page on L1: MISCELLANIA QUAEDAM EJUSDEM AUTORIS. QUIBUS ETIAM ACCESSIT, THRENODIA... IN MEMORIAM ERD. FISHERI TURMAE EQUESTRIS PRAEFECTI. A Domino Petro de Cadonnel Decantata. 1st edition of the author’s 1st or 2nd printed work (one of 2 works by him printed in 1650). Wing F1029-1030. Marston Moor was the most famous battle of the First English Civil War. The Parliamentarians won a decisive victory over the Royalists, who were forced to nearly abandon their fighting in the North. Cavalry commanded by Oliver Cromwell, then a Lieutenant General, played a major role in the victory by breaking the formations of the Royalist forces. At the time, Cromwell wielded far less political influence than he would in later years, when he achieved nearly dictatorial power. Pagani Piscatoris was a pen name for Payne Fisher. Even though Fisher fought for the Royalists at Marston Moor, Cromwell made him poet laureate. Later half leather and marbled board. Covers and title leaf separated. Lacking leaf A1, which sometimes bears a dedication to John Pulleyn but is sometimes blank. See ESTC R202010. [title], [blank verso], [12 dedication pages only], I-70pp, blank [1]-[2] “Miscellania quaedam…” [3]-[36] pp. Collation: [title leaf as A2], A3-[A4], a-[a4], B-O[4], P[1], in 4’s. Loss to margin of pp19/20. Old repair to upper margin of leaf M4. Mostly minor foxing, sometimes more noticeable.
