++ Drayman’s record book. 1827-1843. Maintained by a drayman in Hancock County, Maine. It records rentals of horses for trips to Penobscot, Castine, Blue Hill, and elsewhere. The author also rented out oxen and wagons, and records hauling wood, stone, bark, hay, finished boards, manure and lime for his neighbors. Entries are informative as to the identities of his customers and their occupation in the period before these were listed in the Federal censuses. George W. Buckmore was a blacksmith, George B. Wright a shoemaker. 6-40, [1] pp, plus blank leaves (one with the upper portion used as a diary for a brief period). Lacking 2 leaves at front, which might never have carried text (the first customer record present here is on page 6. Page 5 is blank except for later bookseller’s notes.) 4to. ¼ calf and board. Externally worn, front cover insecure. Dampstaining. ++ Record book kept by Peter A. Filbert (1833-1925), a wealthy Pennsylvania businessman and investor. Filbert had begun in Company D, 10th Regiment, in April 1861. After being mustered out he raised Company B, 96th Regiment, and Company H, 39th Regiment. In Company H he rose to the Rank of Major before being mustered out. In Company B, 96th Regiment, he rose from a Captain to a Lieutenant Colonel before being mustered out on Dec. 22, 1862. 1st text page is a record for goods sold to Company B [96th Regiment]: Sheep, whiskey, officer’s mess, day book for company, savings, and 76 cents for “This Book”). Below Company B’s account record is a note of where Company B was on the day Filbert was mustered out (a camp near White Oak Church, VA). After service, Filbert returned to the business world. Remainder of the volume consists of his rents, real estate investments, land developments, and cash. He owned sizable blocks of railroad stock. He invested in Tombstone Mill and Mining Co. (1880-91). He owned bonds and mortgages in Kansas as well (1880s). Page numbers are not strictly sequential. 8vo. Preruled paper in light brown leather with [Day-Book] spine title and some gilt decoration. Surface wear to covers, interior very good with minor wear. ++ Diary/financial records of Lewis S. Glynn. July 1877 to July 1882. Glynn was a carpenter, cooper, and farmer who lived in North Shrewsbury, Rutland County, Vermont. Records activities at his sawmill and farm, with brief social and family notes. Entered in printed volume, “The People’s Comprehensive Diary,” Syracuse, NY: H. Child, 1877, with columns for daily occupation, sales, purchases, income memoranda and weather, normally 2pp per month. ¼ leather and marbled boards, covers insecure, loose. ++ Account book, 1885-1893. Personal and household expenses of a middle class gentleman in Newark (state unspecified). Includes horse hire, shoeing, a washwoman, other household work, meat, bread, crackers, vegetables, sugar, other food items, medicines, beer glasses, drinks, and “hookers” 2 Vols, tall folio.
