Notes on social events, weather, deaths, marriages, news, and unusual weather. “Died at the Insane Hospital in Worcester Hon George Hood aged” -June 26. “Charles Frost killed by falling under No 5 Empire Engine in Market Street this evening going to a Fire” -Aug. 30. “Died at 420 this P.M. my only Daughter Sarah, wife of Geo H. Chase aged 30 yrs 6 Mo 25 Days- Wait the great teacher, Death, and God adore!” -Oct. 6. 3 days per page. Handwritten text on 49 pages. On contemporary flexible cloth volume with several lines for each day of the year, “Marsh’s Pocket Diary, Or Daily Remembrancer for 1859.” Very good. ++ Diary of Thomas E. Upham, Dorchester District, Boston, Mass., 1879. Contemp cloth volume with “1879” on its title page and the printed dates for daily entries. Focuses on daily activities: Exhibits, croquet, trips to Boston, an auction, etc. He spent a couple months in the South, late winter to May, mostly in Thomasville, GA. On Apr. 20, “I went out to Mitchells Mill point and saw 59 negroes baptized…” About 120pp of daily entries and 13pp of financial records (payments and receipts). Contemp flex cloth with title page “Standard Diary: 1879, Published for Trade” with “1879” also printed in the date for each entry, preceded by a calendar, foreign currency exchange rates, interest tables, etc. Clean text, front hinge cracked. Attribution to Thomas E. Upham and his home town are from ownership inscription on ffep. ++ Diary of Charles J. Upham, brother of Thomas E. Upham. Charles worked in Boston, to which he walked most days! Work, church, and social activities. Same “Standard Diary: 1879” volume, Abt 120pp text and 13pp financial records. Front hinge fully broken, cloth creased/frayed, worn. Accompanied by 2 promissory notes (issued 1860 and 1865), with an older member of the Upham family as a creditor. Loan size: $800 and $1000. Both promissory notes have a list of instalment-payments attached. ++ Diary kept by Oscar R. Adams in Forkston, Wyoming Co., Pennsylvania, in 1880. Farming and lumbering activities, as well as community events. Adams (1842-1919) notes his Civil War service on ffep: “Co B. 52 Ret Pa. Volunteers/ Enlisted Sept 19th 1861/ Discharged March 25th, 1864 at Morris Island, S.C./ John C Dodge Col.” Entries almost entirely pencil, 72pp entries, [9]pp financial records. Contemp leather. Worn. ++ Anonymous diary kept by a 54 year old farmer in a northern portion of Bedford Co., Penn. Farm, family, and social life. Father of 4 children (Charles, Belle, Katie, and Orlo, who had his 3rd birthday Feb. 2). Place names include Pittman, Martinsburg, Woodbury, Blair County, Enterprise, Loysburg, and Waterside. 1889 printed dates on daily entries, title, and calendar. Similar “Standard Diary” to those kept by the Upham brothers (2nd-3rd diaries listed above), but in flex leather. Losses to text of the diarist’s financial records and rear cover. Worn. ++ 16mo/12mo.
