Detailed Manuscript 50 Page Journal of the Warship HMS Agincourt by Future British Vice-Admiral E.D.D. Aplin
October 16, 1844 - April 21, 1845, Manuscript Journal, 50 pages, Very Fine.
Written in the hand of 23-year-old future British Vice-Admiral E.D.D. Aplin, who later made a famous name for himself during the Taiping Rebellion. Covers are a bit tattered and worn, page edges rough and some discoloration. Interior appears in nice condition. This highly detailed Mauscript Journal has 50 pages, Quarto, measuring 8” x 12.5” and provides an accounting of the British Warship HMS Agincourt during travels to China, Hong Kong, and Singapore from 1844 to 1845. It is titled on its cover in manuscript: “Log of the Proceedings of / HMS ‘Agincourt’ - H.W. Bruce Esqr / Captain / Bearing the Flag of / Rear Dml Sit Th Cochrane RN / From the 16th October 1844 to the / 8th March 1845 Kept by / Elphinstone D.D. Aplin. Mate.”

The Agincourt was a warship of the British Navy. This Journal entries detail the ship’s travels to Asia. They describe ship life (“washed blankets...”), with details of drills, religious services, leisure time and recreational activities, as well as descriptions of various mispahs and examples of insubordination by crew members, e.g. “Punished Ed Bhilsly with 48 lashes for insolence.” Rare and unique in content.
