A miniature Qajar Qur'an, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [Persia, mid-nineteenth century] 241 leaves (plus a single flyleaf at each end), complete, single column, 18 lines in elegant black naskh, surah headings and highlights in red, opening 2 leaves illuminated with floral borders and intricate headpieces, heightened in gold, final 2 leaves also richly illuminated with floral motifs above and below text block, text to opening and closing leaves with interlinear colouring in gold, leaves double-ruled in red, black and gold, a few leaves becoming loose, some contemporary notes to margins, otherwise very clean copy, 110 x 70 mm. (written space 80 by 45 mm.); contemporary lacquer boards, decorated with floral motifs framed within calligraphic borders, extremities a little rubbed, with contemporary silk-lined leather satchel with strap (detached on one side) This delicate pocket-sized prayerbook was probably commissioned by an aristocrat for the purposes of Hajj as it appears in fine lacquered boards and in its contemporary leather pouch, often used for carrying miniature Qur ans during pilgrimage.
