Description
Near East, Iran, Achaemenid Empire, ca. 550 to 330 BCE. A terracotta rhyton (ceremonial drinking or libation vessel) in the form of a boot with curved toe in the form of a skillfully delineated mythological anamorphic head with an open mouth - this opening for the ritualistic pouring of sacred libations. The shaft of the vessel flares out from a more narrow foot to the thick rim. Nice remains of red slip on surface. Custom stand. Thermoluminescence testing showed this piece to be 2500 years old. Size: 19" L x 5.125" W x 12" H (48.3 cm x 13 cm x 30.5 cm); 14.5" H (36.8 cm) on stand
