Description
Schoolgirl Sampler. The top register with three pairs of flowering trees centering a flower arrangement flanked by twin crowns and above with twin birds; the Center register with biblical verses and a focal image of Adam and Eve; to the left, Genesis Chapter III, Verse 13 "And the Lord God laid unto the Woman, what is this that thou haft done and the Woman said the Serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.", to the right Romans Chapter 5, Verse 19., "For as by one man's disobedience-many were made farmers. So by the obedience of one that many be made Righteous." Adam and Eve flanking the tree of knowledge with an entwining serpent; the lower register with several pairs birds, trees, fleur-de-lis devices and twin potted plants, over a squiggly line signature medallion, enclosed by a flowering strawberry vine border, all over executed in red, kelly green, grey, olive, blue, pink, black. At the bottom of the sampler sewn in cross stitch "Sarah Boff's work aged 9 years 1783". Dimensions of frame 19 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches (49.5 x 37.4 cm); dimensions of sampler 16 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches (41.3 x 29.9 cm). [Some tears in top register]
