Max Beckmann (German, 1884-1950) was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. Beckmann achieved great success during the years of the Weimar Republic but his fortunes changed with the rise to power of the Third Reich. His work was considered degenerate by Adolph Hitler and Beckmann was dismissed from his teaching position at the Art School in Frankfurt. He left Germany for the Netherlands and later the United States.
