Condition
Beautiful editions of two important works of philosophy and cosmology, printed by Ottaviano Locatelli to Scotus. The first work examines the theories of Aristotle and Averroes on the soul.
Thorndike: “Jean de Jandun of course had to leave Paris as soon as his part in the writing of the Defensor Pacis became known, and after his escape from the papal prison in Avignon, seems to have been with Louis of Bavaria until that monarch's death in 1343, although some would place Jean's death in early as 1328”.
The second work, dealing with cosmology and also about medicine and physics, is curated by Nicoletto Vernia, which enriches it with his comments. Nicoletto Vernia was an Italian Averroist philosopher, at the University of Padua: hs students included Agostino Nifo and Pietro Pomponazzi. Both works with beautiful Printer's mark of Octavian Scotus on recto of the last leaf, many initial on black, Gothic type. Slight marginal moisture glazes, good specimen with wide margins.
Thorndike, III, 282-83, note. First work: S.T.C., p. 357.
