Description
Late 19th century, 152 x 95 cm, South Caucasus, Azerbaijan
This blue-ground prayer rug shows a bridge-shaped arch enclosing a house-like form at the upper end of the field. The design beneath it consists of three rows of large star-shaped blossoms intersected diagonally by stems with buds at their ends. This distinctive motif is occasionally encountered as a field design in the Caucasus, but it occurs far more frequently as a border design. The examples of this type published in literature resemble each other so closely that at times they are hard to distinguish. Schürmann coined the term "Chan-Karabagh" for the group, a name adopted by other authors. However, a number of examples identical in composition and colour scheme display the technical features of the Talish group. – Original end finishes, cut and newly overcast sides, small repiled areas, restored corners.
