Description
First quarter 20th century, 63 x 74 cm, Central Asia, South Tibet
This knotted pillow (jabuye) was woven in the southern Tibetan region of Shigatse. The midnight blue field is entirely taken up by a large dragon with red and white scales; coiled in lively movement, it is chasing flaming pearls among large clouds. It has already caught two of these coveted objects, clutching them in its front claws. The woven image is framed by a polychrome wave border. – Very good condition.
HARRER, HEINRICH, MAUCH, PETER & FORD, JIM, Tibeter-Teppiche. Innsbruck 1987, ill. p. 70
