Description
Classical World, Italy, ca. 630 to 540 BCE. A miniature aryballos, painted black with a scale and linear banded decoration around its middle, and long, leaf-like shapes around the lower body, shoulder, and flat rim. A small strap handle rises from the shoulder to blend into the rim. An aryballos is a vessel with a small, round/ovoid body and a narrow neck terminating in a slightly flared, very narrow spout. The broad, flat lip is designed to prevent spillage. They often served as a container for scented oil, like the kind used by athletes, or medicine. The scale pattern is classic Etruscan, but Etrusco-Corinthian pottery was an imitation and adaptation of the Corinthian style, produced mainly at Vulci, Caere, and Tarquinia. It was inspired by the intensification of trade between Etruria, Greece, and the Near East. Size: 2.25" W x 4.4" H (5.7 cm x 11.2 cm)
