Description
North America, Pacific Northwest, probably Haida people, ca. 20th century CE. A black argillite totem carved with two bears and on a flat base. Argillite is a fine grained sedimentary rock that is essentially a rock made of mud and ooze; they often have a smooth appearance like this one. In the 19th century, the Haida people began to carve this material as a trade good with visiting Europeans. This particular example is carved as a totem, with the two animals stacked atop each other and flowing into each other through the use of similar carved forms and motifs. One of the bears is lucky, having caught a fish that it holds in its paws, and another in its mouth. Size: 2.6" L x 2.3" W x 7.8" H (6.6 cm x 5.8 cm x 19.8 cm)
