Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Laos, ca. 1900 CE. A carved wooden Buddha with some remaining cinnabar pigment and a serene, simple face. He sits atop a tall throne with a lotus design on its upper third. This Buddha is depicted in a mirrored version of the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his left hand (instead of right) over the left knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching the lotus throne. His right hand (instead of left) lies in his lap with the palm upright. With hands reversed, this mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. It is unclear why the mudra is reversed here. Size: 2.75" L x 3" W x 6.75" H (7 cm x 7.6 cm x 17.1 cm)
