Greece, ca. 500 BCE. A beautiful alabastron made from actual alabaster that would have belonged to a wealthy Greek. This is a long-bodied vessel, with a flat disk for the mouth and a rounded base. The shape may have come from Corinth, but the name and material was inspired by the Egyptians - and pottery examples we have from Greece are often painted white in imitation of this stone. These vessels would have held scented oil and, based on paintings on pottery, were frequently owned by women for use after bathing. This example has a thin incised line at the shoulder and a slightly pronounced foot but otherwise has a smooth, marbled surface that seems to glow with an inner light. Comes with custom stand.
