Item Details
Description
Just discovered, fresh to the market. PEGASUS CLOCKWORK ENGINE. STEVENS & BROWN. American tin, clockwork train engine, one of a few known surviving examples. Complex and Desirable. When clockwork mechanism is activated the engine steams forward while the engineer, who has an articulated arm, rings the bell. The engineer is actually constructed of three separate die cut pieces of tin, riveted together. A most complex and highly detailed train engine, including suchdetails as an articulated front pony truck, lacks the front lantern and boiler smoke stack, and cut-out bell support. Finely stenciled cab area, including the stenciled roof, the stenciled name “Pegasus”, a leaf stenciling directly underwindows and stenciled cherries beneath the smokestack. Painted in a multitude of vibrant colors, with a copper wash to the large ornately cast rear wheels. A most ingenious locomotive patented by E.C. Phelps in 1874. One of the mostcomplicated engines of the American tin toys. 11" long, research shows that there are possibly two other examples known. This came from a Midwest Estate Sale. Great opportunity to own a Rare and Desirable early American toy.
