Item Details
Description
(British, 1735-1786) A pair of three-quarter portaits, a Gentleman holding a document inscribed "Survey of 1768", Sitter thought to be Richard Rigby, Paymaster to the Forces in 1768; and a Lady wearing portrait miniatures, both in landscapes with monuments, unsigned, oil on canvas, 50 x 40-5/8 in.; matching 18th century carved and gilt wood frames. Note: It is suggested his waistcoat was worn by officials of the British Paymaster. This is supported by the tower represented in the background. When Rigby came to power he reinvested much into his estate, Mistley Hall. The gatetower of Mistley Hall is believed to be represented here and the date presented on the Survey in the sitter's hand is the year which Rigby attained his position. Provenance: Arthur Ackerman & Son, New York, 1981 as Tilly Kettle (original labels verso and copy of receipt); Private Collection, Wilson, North Carolina
