Description
The Turkmen made many chuvals over the course of their long history, replete with changes in style as well as tastes for color. This is surely a “later” example of the type, yet it retains many characteristics of design encountered in much older weavings.Conventional wisdom among the collector cognoscenti embraces the idea that cochineal is a “late dye”, seen only in weavings from the 4th quarter of the 19th century onwards. And, for the most part, that supposition is correct. With cochineal used liberally throughout this weaving as well as providing the entire ground color for the elem, the wool used here must have cost a great deal of money, given the fact cochineal was imported and not indigenous to the region. Dye analysis is rarely employed when ‘dating’ rugs but some even some 18th century (or before) Turkmen weavings include cochineal that was once thought, be fore analysis, to be lac, another insect derived dye.The design here is called the “aina gol” pattern, with the word “aina” translated as mirror. The reciprocal ‘gol’ formed by the abutting corners of four of the compartments together makes yet another ‘gol’ form, an octagonal, elongated type that is known to be used a primary ‘gol’ by some of the tribes. The ‘elem’ or skirt at the bottom outside the field is decorated with the classic “Tekke tree” pattern, delicately colored, at times even a clear lemon yellow is seen which has retained a vibrantly clear, unfaded presence over the years. This is an unusual characteristic for such a “late” chuval as by the latter part of the 19th century, the art of dyeing was already in decline. The condition is good, with no holes or repairs SIZE - 3'6" x 2'5"
