Description
This elegant Steinway Grand Piano, serial # 62760, was built in 1887 at Steinway Village in Astoria, Queens, New York. It’s from the estate of the historic Barn of Barrington, located west of Chicago. Freshly tuned and cleaned at our auction location this week by a PTG certified piano technician, this fine instrument is fully playable and has a complete range of 85 functional notes, including 50 C-Major Scale (white) and 35 Accidental (black) keys. -- A bit of history: In 1853, when Henry Engelhard Steinweg (later anglicized Steinway) founded Steinway & Sons, he had already built 482 pianos in his native Germany. Since then, the company has handcrafted over 600,000 world-renowned "Piano Forte" (now simply Piano) instruments that continue to be a favored choice of performers, concert halls, theaters, and schools around the world. Steinways are literally built to be rebuilt; there are hundreds of companies and technicians performing this work every day. -- As the 1880s and 1890s approached, manufacturers promoted and popularizing the Grand Piano design. This version, the Steinway Studio Grand, Model B, was first built in 1872; production continues on this popular design today. This particular Model B has an overall dimension of 6’11” by 4’7” (the design length was modified in the late 1880s).-- At a fairly recent point it this piano's historic 129 year life, it was refurbished, including all new pins, strings, non-ivory key caps, gild, sound bridge and action/mechanical work. The serial number (typically in tuning pin area) was obscured, but our technician located same behind the key action (see detail photo of strings). The fine Victorian ebony case is in good overall condition except for surface wear and minor blemishes. -- A fully restored grand commands a premium price, so a wise buyer will purchase this Steinway with that in mind for their own enjoyment or that of their intended recipient. This piano is transportable to every state since the original ivory keys have been replaced. We’ve included detailed photos and historic period images for your benefit. Please do not hesitate to call with questions.
