Description
Manuscript dedicatory letter/epistle for George Wyatt's "Treatise on the Defence of Calais." Dated 1593. 12.5" x 8". Single leaf (blank verso.) Several chips to margins including one small chip to front margin touching a few letters and one larger chip to upper corner removing several words, one long closed tear near center of leaf (rather inconspicuous), some faded staining and toning. Refer to photos. ******************************** A late Tudor manuscript letter by Sir George Wyatt (grandson of the poet Thomas Wyatt and father of an early Virginia Governor.) Wyatt writes to William Brooke, the tenth Lord Cobham and Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1593 shortly before Cobham became Lord Chamberlain and took control of London's theatres. This dedicatory epistle was to accompany his survey of the Calais defenses. Wyatt's work was never published, though the manuscript of the treatise is in the British Library (Add. Mss 62135.) The present is likely written in a scribal hand but is signed by Wyatt at the bottom of the leaf.
