Mali. Bambara people. Bird wooden mask. 1905 gr. (66,7 oz.) 53x23x22 cm (20,7x9x8,6 inch). Rare. The most distinguishing feature of these masks is the projection extending down from the forehead to the chin. It represents a hornbill, the bird honored by the Jimini, the Ligbi, the Senufo and other peoples. The Bambara (Bambara: Bamana or Banmana) are a Mandé people living in west Africa, primarily in Mali but also in Guinea, Burkina Faso and Senegal. They are considered to be amongst the largest Mandé ethnic groups, and are the dominant Mandé group in Mali.
