Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wide-mouthed, delicate glass bowl with incised thin linear bands around its body and a flared rim. At its thickest point - the base - the glass has a pale blue color and some slight iridescence. After the invention of glass blowing in Roman Syria in the 1st century, the industry exploded and expanded throughout the Roman Empire. During the centuries of the height of the Empire, glass was used everywhere - keeping cosmetics and perfumes, serving meals, and used as storage vessels for food and other products to be shipped across the Mediterranean.
