Description
OR THE ADVENTURES OF THREE YOUNG AMERICANS...illustrated with three hundred engravings, Boston, 1891, inscribed by General Joseph Sewall Smith to his nephew Frederick James Smith, signed and dated Bangor Maine, October 29, 1897.

Born in Wiscasset, Maine, on November 27, 1836, Joseph Sewall Smith earned the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Civil War at Hatcher’s Run, Virginia, on October 27, 1863. He served as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Army of the Potomac’s II Corps. He fought in this position at the Battle of Boydton Plank Road (sometimes referred to as the First Battle of Hatcher’s Run) during the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. The award was presented for “having led part of his brigade that saved two pieces of artillery from falling into the enemy’s hands, captured a flag and a number of prisoners.” At the time, he was serving as a Lieutenant Colonel of Subsistence, II Corps.
