Chinese landscape painting of ink and color on paper. Depicting an elderly sage traversing on his path seeking of Tao toward rusting waterfall nestled within dense of leafy bamboo and shading pine trees against misty mountainous landscape. Inscribed and signed by Pan Tianshou, with two seals of the artist, painting was dated July 1962. Mounted on creme-teal silk border.

PROVENANCE: Acquired from a vast Connecticut estate collection in 2007 with records indicating that they were purchased over several years during the early 1900's and up until the 1915's from the JS Ltd Company New York. Pieces of history being passed on to the future.

LOT NOTES:

Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), Chinese painter, art educator, and art theorist who was one of the most important traditional Chinese painters of the 20th century, following Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong, promoted the development of Chinese painting. He is highly esteemed for his dynamic landscape and bird-and-flower paintings imbued with a literati aesthetic. Tianshou argued for a distinct separation between Chinese and Western painting, wrote extensively on Chinese art history and theory, and devoted himself to the proliferation and education of China's artistic heritage. Pan's paintings are known for their bold composition, his vigorous application of brushstrokes and ink splashes, tonal variation, his occasional use of fingers as an unmediated medium, and poetic inscriptions executed in refined calligraphy.
