Description
Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Drape Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW YORK", early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, featuring the large impressed maker's mark of John Remmey, III on the front and an incised drape design on the reverse. Maker's mark, incised decoration, and handle terminals highlighted in a purplish slip, most likely composed of cobalt and manganese. This jar is the first example from the Remmey family's Manhattan period that we have seen featuring an incised Federal drape motif. Rim chips including a smooth, shallow 1 1/4" chip on top of rim, possibly in-the-firing. A 3/4" base chip and a 5/8" glazed-over base chip with a 3 1/2" vertical hairline extending from it. Staining to surface. Some traces of green paint to surface.
