Description
Rare and Fine Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK.", early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated on the reverse with a coggled, scalloped drape motif above an impressed flower blossom, both subtly highlighted in cobalt slip. Front impressed with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr. Brushed cobalt highlights to terminals of one handle. This jar is unusual in its size, use of lug handles (as opposed to the typical open loop handles), and in its coggled drape motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Thin 3 1/4" T-shaped crack on reverse, extending 2 1/4" onto underside. A small rim chip on reverse. Minor chips on interior of rim. A tiny surface nick at base and minor iron ping at base. H 7 5/8".
