JENNIE AUGUSTA BROWNSCOMBE (AMERICAN, 1850-1936) GENRE PAINTING, watercolor on paper, a charming depiction of a young girl wearing fine dress, apron, and bonnet while holding a tray set for tea, standing in a well-appointed interior setting featuring Classical server with carved paw feet, Oriental carpet, and various ceramic articles, signed lower left. Matted and housed under glass in an old gilt frame with Rococo-inspired molded-composition corner ornaments. Late 19th/early 20th century. 16 7/8" x 11 5/8" sight, 28" x 21 3/4" OA.
Painting in good condition with minor toning and foxing. Frame with wear and minor losses. Not examined out of frame.
Catalogue Note: Born in Honesdale, PA, Jennie Augusta Brownscombe (1850-1936) studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York and with Henry Mosler in Paris, 1882-1883. A popular artist in her day, Brownscombe exhibited in the United States and Europe, eventually settling for parts of the year in Rome where she opened up a studio. She also worked as an illustrator, producing scenes for publications such as "Harper's Weekly" and "Scribner's". The present lot is a fine example of the artist's work and demonstrates her deft treatment of light and color.
