Description
Three celluloid, brass, and ribbon badges supporting presidential "hopefuls" for the 1896 and 1916 conventions. Comprises: 1.) 8" long Richard P. Bland 1896 Democrat badge with silver-and-gold toned metal pinback hanger bar imprinted "16 to 1 with equal privileges of the U.S. Mints." Suspended below is an American flag motif ribbon gilt-stamped "Bland Silver Club / Constitutional Money / 16 to 1 / Dollars of our Daddies / St. Louis." Bears a 2" lithographed applied decal portrait set in metal "silver" surround. Reverse bears St. Louis Engraving Co. back paper. 2.) Elihu Root 1916 Republican ribbon with hanger bar reading, "For President" and celluloid photographic portrait in gilt brass eagle surround. 3.) John W. Weeks 1916 Republican celluloid pinback imprinted, "The Army and the Navy Forever / Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue." Features a halftone portrait and attached blue ribbon. Reverse retains original Whitehead and Hoag back paper.
Condition
Bland portrait in excellent, near-mint, condition with light age-toning. Ribbon exhibits wear and a repair on reverse. Root brass elements excellent with some wear to celluloid portrait and age-toning with light soiling to ribbon. Weeks pinback in excellent, near-mint, condition with only light wear and minor adhesive residue. Ribbon exhibits soiling and wrinkles, but complete and in good condition. Back paper mint.
