Item Details
Description
George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, 1944-2013), "Louisiana Legacy", 1981, patinated bronze, cast signature and numbered "5" at front edge, h. 11", w. 9-1/2", d. 9-1/4". Under the orchard-trees and down the path to the meadows; Old folk and young together, and children mingled among them. Fairest of all the maids was Evangeline, Benedict's daughter! Noblest of all the youths was Gabriel, son of the blacksmith - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie. One of George Rodrigue's most beloved sculptures is this depiction from Longfellow's great poem detailing "Le Grand Derangement", the forced evacuation of the Acadians from the Canadian provinces by the British during the French and Indian War. Evangeline and Gabriel are seated beneath the great oak, the poet behind the young couple serving as a benevolent observer.
