Description
Sylvester Martin (British, Active 1856-1906), "The Meet at Beoley, Warwickshire", "Off to the Meet", and "Breaking Cover", three oils on canvas, each signed, former further inscribed en verso, each 18" x 50". Framed alike. Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, New York, June 1, 2000, lot 137.
Condition
All examples with stretcher marks, craquelure, surface soiling and minor accretions. One example with three patched repairs en verso, sky area, all with corresponding inpainting, the largest being an old H-shaped repair in central sky area. A minor inpainting repair in one of the riders. One example with an approximate 1" tear to upper middle sky area, close the the frame. Same example with three inpainting repairs close to the frame in the sky area, one possibly an old horizontal tear (approximately 5" long). One example with a small puncture to upper left corner, with corresponding losses and abrading to upper edge.
