Description
Roswell Gleason & Sons (American (Dorchester, MA), third quarter 19th century. A rare silver plate and cut glass "Magic" caster cruet holder designed in 1857 by Edward Gleason, having a Cathedral form, when knob is twisted, the revolving compartments or doors open simultaneously to reveal the cut glass cruet bottles inside. The exterior of each door is decorated with repousse relief depictions of fish and wild game trophy. The whole is presenting on a turned base further decorated with trumpeting morning glories and vinery. Stamped in an arch at the top "PATENT APPLIED FOR" and marked to the underside of base with Massachusetts State Seal (Gleason & Sons mark 1851-1871). Accompanied with the holder are six matched cut glass bottles, three with plated tops, two with faceted and air trap stoppers and one with flat circular stopper. Approximate height 22".
