Description
Henry James (15 April 1843 – 28 February 1916) American born writer who spent most of his writing career in Britain. He became a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. He is considered one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. This is the first compilation of four stories that previously appeared in magazines. They are: The Figure in the Carpet; Glasses; The Next Time; and The Way It Came. The ex libris shows the name Arthur Ulderic des Jardins. He was the head of the therapeutic radiology section of the Mayo Clinic, an authority on Hodgkins disease, and a professor of radiology of the Mayo Foundation
This is the first edition, published in 1896 by Heinemann (London) of the Henry James group of short stories, “Embarrassments” (The Figure in the Carpet, Glasses, The Next Time + The Way It Came) (263 numbered pages, followed by 32 editorial promotion pages).

Condition
The cover, blue background with blind embossing to the front, gold lettering which is slightly faded but clearly legible, has shallow corner bumps and fraying to the ends of the spine, which is straight. The blind-embossed floral group is in good condition. There are scuffs, but no prominent stains. The only attachment is the attractive bookplate of Arthur Ulderic des Jardins, to the front inside cover. There are some pencil notations to the end pages, but no ink or other indelible marks, and none at all throughout the body of the book. The pages are clean, with all the lettering unfaded. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. Some pages have shallow edge wear, but no notable tears or creases. The ad section is also in very good condition. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the conditions.
