Rare antique Maori kauri gum carved bust from New Zealand, late 19th century. Depicts a proud Maori Chieftain with black hair, painted eyes, and intricate inked facial tattoos (Moko), wearing a feather cloak. Beautifully carved from this amber-like substance which is similar to copal or amber. Naturalistic rendition of features and coloring.
SIZE: Height - 4” (10.25 cm)
NOTES: Carvings depicting Maori tribesmen and women were made in the mid to late 19th century by Maori craftsmen to sell to visitors and tourists to New Zealand.

Condition
Light wear to the painted surfaces. No in-painting. Surface is clean. Very good condition for this type of carving. By its very nature the fossilized Kauri gum is soft and brittle and many sculptures of this type have deteriorated and are in poor condition.
